Working on behalf of the client, CCL Facades delivered specialist remedial glazing works at the Sainsbury’s store in Blackpool, involving the replacement of failed double-glazed units weighing up to 500kg within the existing bolted structural glass shopfront.

The glazing system forms a key architectural feature of the store frontage, requiring precise removal and installation techniques to maintain both structural performance and visual consistency. All replacement units were manufactured to suit verified site dimensions following detailed pre-installation surveys, ensuring accurate fit and alignment with the existing façade system.

Delivering Works Safely Within Live Retail Environment

A key challenge of the project was completing the façade remediation works while the store remained fully operational. This required detailed planning and coordination to minimise disruption to customers, staff and day-to-day store activities.

Out-of-hours working was implemented for areas of high customer interface, including the main entrance on New Larkhill Street, ensuring safe access and efficient installation without impacting trading hours.

CCL Facades also undertook full responsibility for producing detailed method statements, risk assessments and lifting plans, alongside temporary works design to maintain stability of the existing façade throughout the replacement process.

Ensuring Quality, Compliance And Long-Term Performance

To ensure long-term performance of the replacement glazing, all units were supplied with full heat soak testing certification, including calibration records. Upon completion of the installation, a water test was carried out across all replaced panels to confirm the façade was fully sealed and watertight, with verification reporting provided.

Following completion, the façade and surrounding areas were cleaned, all waste removed from site, and Operation and Maintenance manuals provided to support ongoing maintenance and performance of the façade system.
