CCL Facades contributed to the refurbishment of Huddersfield’s historic market hall as part of the Our Cultural Heart regeneration scheme.
Delivered by main contractor BAM, the project forms part of a wider investment to transform the town centre, breathing new life into a listed building while creating a modern cultural destination.
Appointed to deliver the glazing package, CCL Facades supported the sensitive refurbishment works, ensuring the façade systems aligned with both the architectural vision and the requirements of a heritage-led regeneration project.
Aluminium Glazing And Curtain Wall Systems
The façade package included aluminium curtain walling, windows and doors, alongside the installation of replacement glazing units across the building. In total, the works comprised approximately 1,430 sqm of curtain walling, glazing units, and 19 doors, forming a comprehensive upgrade to the building envelope.
All systems were carefully integrated within the existing structure, delivering improved performance while maintaining the character of the original building. The glazing solution was designed to maximise natural light throughout the internal spaces, supporting the building’s new use as a vibrant cultural and community hub.
Responding To Structural Movement
A key challenge of the project was working with the existing roof structure, which incorporates 33 parabolic rooflights capable of movement in multiple directions. This required the curtain walling systems to be carefully designed and detailed to accommodate structural movement of up to 100mm in all directions and ensure long-term performance.
To address this, flexible sealing solutions were incorporated, allowing for movement while maintaining weather tightness and integrity of the façade. Through detailed design coordination and technical expertise, CCL Facades delivered a robust and compliant glazing solution that supports both the heritage refurbishment and future performance of this landmark building.
