In 2025, CCL Facades, delivered its most technically challenging façade to-date, a facades package for a new drug development facility for a global leader in pharmaceuticals.

Working on behalf of main contractor, Eric Wright Group, CCL Facades developed a bespoke solution, becoming one of the most complex and architecturally striking projects in CCL Facades’ portfolio.

Contributing to a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating, this high-performance envelope features a fully integrated system of industry-leading Speedpanel solutions, high-specification curtain walling, and custom-designed 3D aluminium rainscreen panels, establishing a new benchmark for Grade A commercial and laboratory space.

Architectural vision & technical excellence

The architectural vision, created by ADP Architects, called for an innovative façade that would bring depth and texture to the building through triangular columns, large perforated panels, and dramatic overhangs. These elements would shift in appearance with changing daylight, giving the structure a dynamic and engaging character.

To deliver this design, CCL Facades engineered a bespoke curtain walling system using the products that meet both the technical demands and architectural intent of the project. The integration of all components was managed using advanced modelling software, ensuring precise coordination across all systems. Elements included Curtain Walling systems, aluminium panels and our UK manufactured Speedpanel A2-rated steel-faced spandrel panels.

Managing complex installation

Façade installation required careful planning due to the scale and precision of components. A phased approach began with curtain walling to create a watertight envelope, allowing internal works to progress alongside external installation.

Rainscreen cladding was installed using thermally isolated brackets, with MEWPs and specialist lifting equipment ensuring accurate placement of large glass units and aluminium panels. Despite complex geometry, installation was completed with zero tolerance breaches.

With restricted site access and concurrent works, close coordination with the main contractor was essential. Daily planning, controlled deliveries, and off-site prefabrication helped maintain safety, minimise disruption, and keep the programme on track.

Thermal efficiency

The façade exceeded performance targets in terms of thermal efficiency, and visual impact. Kawneer’s curtain wall achieved an airtightness of 0.9 m³/hm², surpassing the target of 1.0. The curtain wall also supported double-glazed units with a U-value of 1.13 W/m²K, while the cladding achieved an impressive 0.17 W/m²K, contributing to the building’s BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating.

The completed building is now operational and its striking appearance is defined by its innovative facade, standing proudly as a testament to the quality and precision that can be achieved through design-led collaboration, advanced fabrication, and meticulous installation.
