Working on behalf of main contractor and sister company, Caddick Construction, CCL Facades installed a high-performance rainscreen system at Lumina Village in Manchester, forming part of wider construction works to deliver 199 new homes, including modern apartments and townhouses alongside ground-floor retail space.

The façade package combined innovative materials, modern construction methods and close collaboration with the wider project team to achieve a durable, visually striking building envelope that meets demanding performance standards.

Collaborative Design Development

Close collaboration between CCL Facades, the design team and Caddick Construction was instrumental to the successful delivery of the project. During the early stages, thermal model calculations revealed that the original façade design would not achieve the required performance targets.

Working proactively with the project team and supply chain partners, CCL Facades proposed the use of a composite panel rainscreen support system. This solution enabled the façade to meet the project’s thermal performance requirements while maintaining the intended architectural appearance. By integrating modern building methods with the established masonry and glazing façade aesthetic, the revised design ensured the development achieved the required 0.18 W/m²K U-value alongside project-specific air leakage and acoustic performance standards.

High Performance Rainscreen Façade System

The façade package incorporated 1,520 sq m of rainscreen support panels using the Kingspan K-Roc stone mineral wool insulated composite panel system. Installed directly onto the SFS structure, the panels were supplied in 1200mm module widths with insulation thicknesses of 125mm and 175mm, depending on the specific detailing requirements. All panels featured a Slate Grey Prisma coated steel external face, providing durability alongside excellent thermal performance.

A further 600 bespoke aluminium rainscreen cassette panels were installed as the primary external cladding finish. These large-format, 35mm deep aluminium cassettes were polyester powder coated in RAL 7013 and designed to create a clean, secret-fix appearance once installed, delivering a crisp and contemporary architectural finish across both residential blocks.

Architectural Detailing and Integrated Façade Elements

Complementing the main façade installation, CCL Facades delivered a range of integrated architectural elements to complete the building envelope. This included 220 sq m of aluminium soffit systems installed beneath the ground-floor portico and within balcony areas. The soffit system comprised interlocking, conceal-fixed aluminium cassette planks in RAL 7013, supported by a dedicated suspension grid and combined with 260mm Rockwool soffit slab insulation fixed to the concrete slab above.

Across the project, more than 5,600 linear metres of polyester powder coated aluminium flashings, trims, copings and associated components were installed to ensure weatherproofing, detailing continuity and a high-quality finished appearance.

Through technical expertise, collaborative working and attention to detail, CCL Facades helped realise the vision for Lumina Village, supporting the delivery of high-quality, energy-efficient homes that contribute to the continued regeneration of Manchester.
